Tongue biting
Hi,
Since using the cpap and having a full face mask I have been trying to sleep with my mouth closed. I can do that ok but I keep biting my tongue and it is very sore and getting lumps on it and it also wakes me up with the pain.
I have searched for mouth guards but can't seem to find anything that will stop my tongue going between my teeth, there are mouth guards to stop you grinding your teeth, but they don't keep your tongue out of the way.
Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a way to get over it?Lorraine

Can't believe I have started biting my tongue, five nights on the trot! I bit it so hard last night it woke me up. My tongue is edged with ulcers, I have even managed to cut the tongue and it was bleeding.
Can't find a reason from my graphs, but I am a bit stressed to say the least.
Any solutions apart from chilling out?Comment

Sounds painful! How about those gizmos designed to stop you grinding your teeth? Goodness knows what they are called. Maybe if you can't grind your teeth you also can't bite your tongue - or at least, not as hard. Ah! or a gum shield as per rugby players.

Thanks TF - bought a sports gumshield, it is an 'orrible mouthful and gunky in the morning but is allowing my tongue to heal so I could reasonably enjoy a Sunday lunch and a hot coffee after.
Could be stress (mother is v.poorly), I suspect though pollen or some other prob up my hooter as I have a constant sore throat a little flem my voice has changed and as a nasal CPAP mask user I am unusually suffering from mouth leaks.

Updae. After a week of wearing the gumshield overnight, with it re-educating me not to bite my tongue, I have dropped it over the last two nights and thankfully appear to have got over the episode. Still have no idea what caused it, but at least I could retrain to get over it.

Update 2: dohhhhhhhh!!!!!! Few nights off and started biting again so it is back to the gumshield. Perhaps I didn't give it long enough the first time.
Any other nasal breathers getting this problem due to pollen this year?

How d'you do that?
I love these gigantic leaps made to suit current thinking - I'm a logical step by logical step kinda guy and thus incapable of them. Dull but true!
How do you get, Barely Awake, from pollen count to biting your tongue in one apparently easy leap? and done so elegantly! Stunning!

BA..........not getting biting but the nasal drip of summertime is in full flow. If I could vaporise everything in a ten mile radius that had lil bits that get up my nose during the day (pollen, cat hair, mites, smell of curry powder etc) I would cheerfully do so............apologies to the cats as I like them but needs must. The cattargh cough is one of the joys of summer mornings but there are worse things.....like pre cpap !!

Via a logical step kinda guy with a medical degree that researches sore throats.
I have no idea what the cause or causes are in my present case, so merely asked if anyone had encountered this due to pollen (it being the time of year). I suspected stress uppermost as coping with a parent diganosed with dementia is something I have found testing.

Thanks Martin. I don't usually get any problem beyond oil seed rape coming into flower, but two people I know that don't suffer hay fever seem to have had it or something like it over the past month or so. I guess we all have thresholds and in certain conditions or certain crops being grown we might develop a problem. I am scratching my head though ( a symptom of the puzzle, not crops or cat hair).

Not sure if anyone is aware of this but you can buy Tongue Guards of the internet. Just try searching for them and you will soon find them.

Thanks. I did order some last week, two nights and they are slimmer and more comfortable. They have a tab on the front for easy clean extraction too.

I seem to have a problem where I bite the inside of my lips or side of my mouth, but fortunately have never bitten my tongue.
